The role of the Pharmacy Technician is to support and assist the Pharmacist and Reg! istered Nurse in the medication use process. To ensure the delivery of competent and efficient pharmaceutical care at appropriate service levels through daily allocation and coordination of resources to assure that patient needs are met. The Pharmacy Technician is primarily responsible for chemotherapy/biotherapy compounding, mixing intravenous medications and fluids, maintaining appropriate inventory, preparing claims for patients assistance programs and maintaining all pharmacy logs. The population served is young adult to geriatrics.
Mixes chemotherapeutic /biological agents, other medications and intravenous fluids proficiently according established policies and procedures. Follows all NIOSH and OSHA procedures for compounding safety and quality. Mixes research medications and maintains research documentation as directed. Ensures integrity and confidentiality of research studies.
Demonstrates proficiency with pharmacy inventory including: orderi! ng medications, (possessing good working knowledge of brand names and t! heir generic equivalents), reconciling deliveries, rotating stock and working within established par levels. Inventories controlled substances daily. Utilizes resources appropriately and assists department with resource utilization efforts.
Maintains a working knowledge of patient chart/records and files including protection of patient confidentiality. Assists pharmacist in maintaining accuracy of the pharmacy chart. Assists in completion of compliance checker. Reconciles daily patient charges. Maintains appropriate documentation in compliance with federal/state regulations and departmental policy/procedure (e.g. temperature, usage, lot # logs).
Maintains cleanliness of pharmacy including appropriate disposal of wastes. Utilizes Logician appropriately to verify and accurately prepare daily patient treatment schedules. Ensures compliance with sample drug policies and maintains and rotates sample drug supplies.
Required
Technician registration i! n the state of practice (KY/IN).
Registered Technician with KY Board of Pharmacy or eligible within 30 days of employment.
Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) within 90 days of employment.
Minimum 6 months previous pharmacy experience and or completion of ASHP accredited pharmacy
technician program
