DUTIES:
Pharmacy technicians are valued members in our service. We expand traditional roles with promotional opportunities to specialized and clinical roles alongside a Pharmacist. Pharmacy technicians function in various areas of the pharmacy, e.g., inpatient, outpatient pharmacy and patient care areas under the supervision of the lead technician, or registered pharmacist in the absence of the Operations manager. Pharmacy technicians duties include but not limited to; processing and filling outpatient prescriptions for scheduled and non-scheduled legend drugs, and supply items; inpatient preparation of and distribution of unit dose medications and ward stock items, maintenance, re-stocking and troubleshooting of automated dispensing equipment; patient and customer relations.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
GS-5:
Experience: At least 1 year of experience at the next lower level that demonstrates the core competencies (KSAs) described at the GS-4 level;
OR
Education:
Successful completion of a 4-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours of courses related to pharmacy or pharmacy technology; successful completion of pertinent specialized training courses in pharmaceutical and pharmacy services while serving in the Armed Forces is creditable on a month-for-month basis up to the 1 year of experience required for the GS-5 level.

HOW YOU WILL BE EVALUATED:
Employees will be evaluated in accordance with current VA and/or Medical Center policies. Applicants will be evaluated according to the degree to which they possess the following knowledge, skills, abilities, and other characteristics (KSAO's). Your application should clearly show your possession of the KSAO's within your application, i.e. Resume, to show the breadth and depth to which you possess them. All information will be evaluated at face value, and no assumptions will be made. Candidates who fail to submit all required documents by the closing date may be deemed ineligible.
1. Knowledge of medications including brand and generic nomenclature, usual and available strengths, and common dosage forms.
2. Skilled in independently preparing medication orders and prescriptions in accordance with pertinent policies, rules and regulations prior to pharmacistÂ's final check of the work.
3. Ability to Ability to work in both the inpatient and outpatient pharmacy areas to include IV compounding, prescription and medication order processing, and inventory management.
4. Other factors include exceptional customer service and team building. Must be able to work some evenings and weekends on a rotational basis.

OTHER INFORMATION:
VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employees credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service.
